Abstract Lost circulation during drilling/cementing of geothermal wells in the Geysers area of California continues to be a troublesome problem. Despite recent developments in lost circulation technology, more traditional materials are still highly effective, although the manner in which they are being used differs from previously employed procedures. A case in point would be use of reactive silicate compounds to combat lost circulation. Integration of lost circulation control technology into a comprehensive, engineered drilling/cementing program has led to a successful system for dealing with lost circulation at the Geysers. Case histories of representative jobs are presented to illustrate major components of the cementing program developed for the Geysers.
