| Abstract | The Shady Rest borehole (RD08) located near the Shady Rest Campground 2 km northeast of the town of Mammoth Lakes, California was cored to a depth of 2,346 ft. Unexpectedly high temperatures (202°C) were encountered at shallow depths (1,110 ft). Assuming hydrostatic conditions, these temperatures are within 10°C of boiling. Although the results of the drilling, sampling, and logging programs have not yet been fully integrated, and critical experiments and analyses remain underway, we present precision temperature and natural gamma ray logs that may be relevant to future interpretations, as well as some preliminary speculations as to the meaning of the results. |
