Abstract This paper describes some of the considerations for the use of absorption refrigeration equipment in geothermal applications. The basic operation of the absorption cycle is describe and equipment performance for both large and small tonnage machines is covered. Capital and operating costs for absorption and vapor compression equipment are compared and data for an actual geothermal installation is presented. Finally, a brief discussion of low temperature refrigeration using ammonia/water equipment is provided.
