Abstract Kizildere Geothermal Field is the first field developed in Turkey. The field is situated in the Buyuk Menderes graben, near the city of Denzali in western Anatolia. Geological, geophysical, and geochemical studies, drilling and testing have been carried out in this field by the MTA General Directorate. Kizildere has been proven as a high temperatures, hot water dominated geothermal field by drilling 16 deep wells having reservoir temperatures of 170 to 212°C. The wells were drilled between 1968 to 1973. A 20.6 MW power plant was installed by the Turkish Electricity Authority in 1984. Besides electricity production, integrated utilization is planned. It is necessary to solve scaling and waste water disposal problems, as well as to explore the possibility of a deeper, third reservoir for maintaining the efficiency of the existing power plant and field development.
