Abstract This paper describes the latest information concerning the assessment of geothermal energy in China. The discharge of natural heat is 2.66 x 10/13 kcal per year. For convection dominated geothermal resources, the identified and possible potential for electric generation are 220 and 3,513 MWe respectively, while those for direct use are 494 and 3,491 MWt respectively. With regard to conduction dominated geothermal resources, the identified and possible potential for direct use are 1,096,095 and 2,104,930 MWt respectively.
