Abstract Canada has significant geothermal resource in the western mountains and in the sedimentary aquifers of the prairies. So far, the only use of geothermal water is for baths and spas in the south and for preservation of municipal water supplies in the north. The declining need for electrical power has resulted in cancellation of a major geothermal exploration programme in British Columba. On the prairies there is a growing interest in geothermal heat, despite the low population density and cheap natural gas.
