Abstract The state of the tectonic stress is presented for the Eastern Hachimantai field, the model field of the I-project at Tohoku University, for establishing a design methodology of geothermal reservoir cracks. The stress state is determined through analyzing the data of hydraulic fracturing by a new method which is appropriate even when the wellbore axis is not parallel to one of the principal axes of the tectonic stress. The characteristics of the stress state are discussed for estimating the orientation of the artificial reservoir crack that is schedule to be created in the field.
