Abstract This paper summarizes the results of the work done in the European Community to assess the geothermal resources. It covers low, medium and high enthalpy areas and demonstrates that low enthalpy resources exist in nearly all Member States while high enthalpy resources are restricted to Italy and Greece. The Accessible Resource Base to a depth of 7 km is calculated for all geothermal areas. An estimate of the currently known resources (amount of geothermal energy extractable in the future) leads to about 800.10/18. J. Assuming a 10% recovery at the present time, the available energy for 100 years would cover about 2% of the yearly energy consumption in the EC.
