This paper described the current development of a finite element computer program, GEODYN2, capable of simulating the three dimensional transient dynamic interaction behavior of a rotating bottom hole assembly (BHA) interacting within a wellbore intersecting non-uniform formations (comprised of variable lithology and topology). The GEODYN2 Program facilitates a very detailed analysis of the interaction behavior between a PDC bit, in addition of variably shaped (blade dimensions, spiral vs. straight, etc.) stabilizers, and the non-uniform wellbore formations. This capability, in addition to the Programs' ability to simulate response variations attributable to well bore non-uniformities, will be demonstrated. Planned developmental phases will address a drill ahead (rock penetration and removal) simulation capability, and ultimately, the response of the entire drill string. |
