Studies including geology, gravity, magnetics, soil mercury geochemistry and a thermal gradient well have been completed at Newberry volcano. Silicic volcanism indicated magma was present beneath the caldera 1,350 years B.P. A thermal gradient well in the caldera has measured a temperature of 265°C. The shape of the gravity, magnetic and mercury anomalies and the distribution of rhyolite vents suggests the magma chamber is centered beneath the caldera and the volcano's southern and southeastern flanks. |
