| Abstract | The purpose of this paper is to present the first quantitive national estimate of direct geothermal energy use based upon an aggregation of site specific analyses of all known geothermal resources. The quantitive analysis supports the following conclusions: 1. Geothermal energy can make a significant contribution to the nation's low temperature energy needs, 2. The major portion of direct use penetration will consist of district heating applications, 3. Most development will occur in the western U.S. due to the resource quality. |
