Hydrogen sulfide emissions from geothermal operations at the Geysers, California are perceive as a problem. California has adopted an ambient air quality standard of 30 parts per billion. Ambient monitors have recorded levels in excess of this standard. Local air pollution control regulations were enacted to reduce H2S levels. H2S emission sources at the Geysers include natural fumaroles, wells, steam collection system vents, power plant off gas vents, cooling towers and steam stacking. The state of the are abatement has improved significantly during the last few years through application of various technologies. The environmental economic and energy costs have unfortunately been significant. Many new technologies are under development or planned. |
