Abstract Bottom hole temperature (BHT) data from oil and gas wells were used to evaluate geothermal energy resources in the Tennessee Valley region and adjacent states. The geothermal gradient of reach of the 13 geologic subregions was established by linear regression of all the BHT data within the subregion. A routine statistical procedure identified all unusually warm wells within each subregion, and their locations were plotted. "Hot spots" within each subregion were identified by localized clustering of such wells in numbers exceeding statistical expectations based on the intensity of drilling activity.
