| Abstract | Approximately 100 Department of Defense (DOD) installation have been identified world wide as having geothermal potential. Of this, some 35 sites within the continental United States are worth local geologic review for geothermal potential based on their proximity to known hot springs. With this large number of potential geothermal resource sites on Defense lands, the likelihood of a direct conflict between energy development and mission capability is staggering. Measures can and must be taken to avert this conflict. To be successful in developing these resources will required the joint efforts of all sectors of the government and private industry. |
