| Abstract | Industrial processes often comprise many heat transfer operations and potential sources of heat, with water widely used as the heat transmission vehicle. Since there are economic advantages in reusing the effluent from a hotter operation to heat a cooler one, the thermal design of these industrial processes has to be done by considering simultaneously all the heat transfer operation and potential heat sources. Provided some rules are followed in decomposing process in elementary heat transfer operations, tasks, it possible to solve the problem efficiently be rather simple methods. Two of them, an algorithmic procedure, suitable for hand calculation in processes without many tasks, and a more powerful mathematical programming approach are presented. |
