The engineering, economics and environmental feasibility of utilizing geothermal energy for the processing of tungsten ore was investigated for the Union Carbide facilities near Bishop, California. The tungsten mine and processing mill are located within an area designated as valuable prospectively for geothermal resources. The evaluation progresses through analysis of energy use at the tungsten mining complex, identification of potential end used of geothermal energy, design of a geothermal energy system and economic analysis of replacing conventional energy sources in phases of processing the tungsten ore. Another focused of the study was a preliminary geochemical evaluation of local groundwater to confirm the potential of a geothermal reservoir at the project site. |
