| Abstract | A preliminary design has been prepared for dual purpose plant to produce both distilled water and electric power from geothermal brines. This report is a summary of the results of a study done for the Water and Power Resources Services. Three alternative production ratios of water and power have been analyzed as case studies. These analyses provide the first combined process and cost analysis for this multiple purpose geothermal resource utilization. In each of the three cases, substantial quantities of both electric power and desalted water were produced. The study was based on the resource located near Springerville, Arizona, for which geological studies indicate a capability of delivering geothermal brine at temperatures between 150°C and 200°C (302°F to 392°F) form a depth of 1800 to 2100 meters (6,000 to 7,000 ft). The production rate is estimated to be 50,000 to 250,000 acre-feet per year. |
