Abstract Because of cheap, reliable and easy to interpret flow-meter is not at present available, an important aspect of bore measurement and investigation is largely neglected. The method described here consists simply of measuring, with a spring balance, the impact of water flow on a circular plate lowered downhole in a stepwise sequence. The system allows for logging speeds comparable to those obtained in other downhole measurement and has the advantage for immediate surface readout and plotting. The results so far obtained show the validity of the system, its shortcomings being demonstrably outweighed by the ease with which a meaningful log is obtained.
