Thermal springs occur in more than 60 locations in the extinct volcanic islands of Fiji. Discharge in two areas, temperatures reach boiling. The chemistry of the thermal waters is variable, largely du to mixing of seawater and cool groundwater. Chemical geothermometry indicates subsurface water temperatures of from 90° to 120°C, and to as high as 160°C in one locality. Varying amounts of sinster of different compositions are deposited by the spring waters. Stable isotope determinations confirm that the thermal waters are of meteoric origin. |
