Abstract In accordance with the provisions of AB2644 geothermal exploratory projects in California must be approved by the California Division of Oil and Gas, and decisions on these projects must be made within 135 days from the time an application is received. In this period, the division must complete its responsibilities as Lead Agency pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act , CEQA. Division regulations developed to implement AB2644 provide for the preparation of a Notice of Exemption, Negative Declaration, or Environmental Impact Report. The division may delegate its AB2644 responsibilities to local governments with geothermal elements in their general plans.
