Abstract A comprehensive geothermal exploration program was performed in Nicaragua by IECO during the course of one year. The area of interest covered 20,000 sq. km of which three priority areas were selected for initial investigations. The overall and priority areas were selected on the basis of geologic history, structure, existing and past vulcanism, heat flow, and analysis of major known geothermal fields. The program consisted of a reconnaissance and a detailed phase of investigations. The short time period allocated required that various studies - preferably undertaken sequentially - be conducted contemporaneously. Promising target area were selected based on agreement of all data. the program resulted in establishing two deep primary reservoirs of large proportions which feed several secondary reservoirs.
