As of June 15, 1979 there were fifteen geothermal power plants online in one geographic area of the United States (the Geysers, 668 et MW) and eight geothermal power plants online in seven different geographic areas of the People's Republic of China (4.9 MW), four of which utilized binary systems. The Geothermal Research Division of the Academia Sinica's Institute of Geology has published an initial evaluation of the geothermal potential of China: "Collection of Papers on Geothermal Studies", Science Press, Beijing (1978). 2,500 hot springs are reported in China and twenty two Provinces, Municipalities and Districts are reported to be developing hot spring areas.
