Abstract A second Edition Handbook on Material Selection Guidelines for Geothermal Energy Systems is in final preparation. This DOE funded effort emphasizes that the most important difference between traditional steam systems and those that utilize geothermal fluids and/or steam is the potential for corrosion of metals caused by the geothermal fluids. Seven key chemical species are identified that account of most corrosion phenomena in geothermal systems. Geothermal materials test data and test methods as well as actual plant operating experience are presented for U.S. sites and geothermal sites in seven foreign countries. From these data, materials can be selected for use where new geothermal resources are similar to those contained in the handbook.
