Abstract Superheating of originally saturated geothermal steam in mainly controlled by flow conditions, i.e., by effective separation of steam flow from water and by the fact that the flow is isoenthalpic, Additional superheating relative to isoenthalpic flow of initially saturated steam sometimes occurs at high flow rates and heat transfer from the country rock may not contribute significantly to it. The change of kinetic energy to thermal form was suggested earlier as an explanation for this additional superheating at high flow rates, and evidence published since appears to support this view.
