Abstract The Greater North China Area (GNCA) covers seven provincial regions in norther China. It is composed of North China Craton and Erdos Mesozoic Basin, and the Shandon Peninsular. This has been the major area for geothermal industrial development in China for direct uses, mainly space heating and cooling. There are two main types of geothermal reservoirs in the area: Mesozoic sandstone and Protozoic carbonates reservoirs. This paper discussions the technological innovations in enhanced and sustainable geothermal reservoir development, including monitoring and predictive reservoir modeling, especially geothermal energy storage that integrates other renewable energy sources to increase the capacity of geothermal resources, which is usually labeled as “geothermal plus”. There are challenges in the area, such as thermal imbalance with respective to shallow geothermal development using heat pumps, wide application of geothermal storage to meet the demand of urbanization for higher capacity of geothermal heating and cooling, future perspectives will be addressed focusing on integrated energy systems utilizing excess off-grid power from solar panels and wind power to achieve geothermal+ at industrial scale, i.e. covering a whole city or at least a township community for heating and cooling of buildings in GNCA.
