| Abstract | This study investigates the relationship between Landsat Collection 2 Level 2 Land Surface Temperature (LST) anomalies and shallow ground temperature measurements (<30 cm depth) to assess their potential for detecting geothermal anomalies. We analyzed freely available Landsat LST scenes and compared the ready-to-use LST product with in-situ thermal data from known geothermal sites. The analysis revealed a consistent spatial correlation between satellite-derived LST anomalies and subsurface temperatures, particularly near active hot springs in the southern crater region. However, LST values were systematically lower than ground measurements, likely due to atmospheric attenuation and the shallow subsurface thermal gradient. Despite this offset, the stable LST–ground temperature patterns across multiple acquisitions demonstrate that Landsat’s standard LST product, without complex and advanced processing, can effectively support preliminary geothermal exploration. These findings underscore the utility of Landsat LST as a cost-effective tool for identifying persistent geothermal features. |
