Abstract Lithium-enriched brines within Alberta's Devonian sedimentary basins have measured concentrations up to 140 mg/L. With the escalating demand for lithium and advancements in direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies, these deep subsurface brines are garnering increased industrial interest. Concurrently, the substantial volumes of produced water from depths exceeding 1,000 m present an untapped potential for geothermal energy recovery, despite formation temperatures typically below 150 °C. This study aims to evaluate the potentials of co-developing lithium extraction and geothermal energy production. We begin by mapping and ranking potential sites for dual-resource development. Subsequently, we assess the environmental and economic implications of integrating geothermal heat recovery and power generation with lithium extraction operations. To address uncertainties, Monte Carlo simulations are employed, providing a probabilistic framework for resource potential and economic viability. Our findings offer a strategic pathway for sustainable resource utilization in Alberta's energy sector, and may also inform similar efforts in geologically comparable settings worldwide.
