Abstract The geothermal information system GeotIS is a public, digital geothermal atlas on the Internet which covers Germany and Upper Austria. It provides extensively data relevant for the development of shallow and deep geothermal enery and annual statistics of energy production of deep geothermal facilities. Besides diagrams, tables and maps, GeotIS also offers E-learning, downloads of data and reports. The integrated 3D subsurface models on geology and temperature, which can be visualized, for instance via interactive cross sections, are something quite extraordinary for web-GIS.
Recent developments improved the user-friendliness by restructuring of contents, implementation of easy-to-use features and an extended help system. One of these features is the geothermal score which is a five-colour-label that gives simplified information about the geothermal suitability of a location for five standardized use cases.
Within the THC-Prognos project, a broad survey on geothermal fluid properties has been initiated. The collected data will be compiled, validated and used for mapping formation-specific fluid provinces. The resulting maps and data will also be published in GeotIS.
Within the WärmeGut project, data and maps on shallow geothermal energy have been added. A primary objective is to integrate a customized version of the software GEO-HANDlight into GeotIS for fast calculation of borehole heat exchanger arrays. This enables users to estimate the spatial shallow geothermal energy potential. The estimates can be matched with the energy demand for heating in the corresponding region in order to assess the potential share of ground source heat pumps to the overall energy consumption for heating.
