Abstract Geothermal energy development in sedimentary basins has been successfully implemented in Europe, particularly for district heating applications near population centers. In Canada, however, geothermal development remains limited, despite the presence of some of the world's largest sedimentary basins. This is primarily due to the widespread availability of inexpensive natural gas, as well as geological and investment uncertainties, resulting in a lack of targeted studies to identify optimal geothermal reservoirs.
This study explores the geothermal potential in the Williston Basin, Canada's second-largest sedimentary basin, which benefits from extensive oil and gas data. Two stratigraphic horizons with contrasting characteristics, depths and lithologies are evaluated: the deep Cambrian Deadwood Formation (clastic, 1.2–3 km depth, 70–125 °C) and the shallower Devonian Duperow Formation (limestone, 0.5–1.6 km depth, 30–80 °C). Both horizons host aquifers with varying flow rates and thermal properties. By integrating key reservoir parameters such as porosity, permeability, thickness, thermal conductivity, temperature, and flow rate, this study identifies the most technically and economically viable geothermal target for potential deployment in nearby communities, particularly those currently reliant on diesel-generated power. The findings contribute to advancing geothermal energy strategies in Canada’s sedimentary basins.
