Abstract This paper elaborates on the design phase of GEOLAB, which is part of the geothermal park at the Hellisheiði geothermal field in Iceland. This lab offers significant advantages over both laboratory-scale and field-scale setups due to factors such as the availability of geothermal fluids, authentic geothermal environmental conditions, and the ability to test a broader range of alternative scenarios. There are currently a number of ongoing projects that will be scaled up within this pilot facility under real geothermal conditions, including the GeoEjector system and a project for measuring real-time conditions of two-phase geothermal fluid. The specific designs for these projects involve components such as pressure vessels and separators, heat exchangers, atmospheric flash tanks, vortex flow meters, and other related instruments. The anticipated available geothermal fluid resource consists of 3 kg/s of saturated brine at 170 °C from the Hellisheiði power plant. Therefore, testing will involve various scenarios with flow rates of separated steam ranging from 0.01 to 0.11 kg/s, pressures from 3 to 7 bar_a, and steam qualities between 0.2 and 1.0. The design also follows standard specifications for vessels and piping to ensure compliance with safety procedures.
