Abstract Since the beginning of its commercial operations in May 1979, the Tiwi Geothermal Field has been providing clean sustainable energy to the Luzon grid of the Philippines. The steam field is currently operated by the Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc. Following the steep decline of Naglagbong in the 1980s, the field development has then been shifted to the northwest (Matalibong), south (Kapipihan), and southwest (Bariis) sectors of the service contract area.

Several challenges to continue producing at the optimum capacity have been addressed and mitigated through the implementation of different technologies and changes in operational strategies. Multiple studies have also been conducted to understand better the root of these issues and implement the appropriate solutions.

In recent years, there has been several drilling and workover campaigns aimed to augment both the steam production and brine injection capacities of the field. Two wells have been successfully drilled in the South Kapipihan sector and another one in Bariis to capitalize on the known prolific production from the upflow zones. Wellwork campaigns – both rig and non-rig – were also implemented alongside the make-up well drilling. Continuous programs are being studied and developed to monitor and address the major issues of the field including marginal fluid reflux, injection breakthrough, aggressive wellbore scaling, acid production, and changes in enthalpy.
