Abstract Wellhead power plants offer a flexible and rapid deployment model for geothermal energy, particularly in high-temperature fields undergoing phased development. While their operational potential is increasingly recognized, targeted operator training tools remain limited. This study presents the development of a simplified training simulator for a 5 MW geothermal wellhead power plant, modeled on actual configurations from Kenya’s Olkaria geothermal field.
The simulator, built using MATLAB and Simulink, incorporates dynamic models of the production well, separator, steam line, steam turbine, governor control valve and generator. Control logic is implemented through a PID controller to emulate real-time system response. A simple graphical interface can be incorporated to allow manipulation of operating parameters such as load demand, valve positions, and setpoints, with power output visualized in real time.
The simulator enables operators to observe plant response under various transient conditions—including pressure fluctuations, load changes, and control disturbances—within a safe virtual environment. This promotes experiential learning, enhances understanding of control dynamics, and supports faster adaptation to field operations.
The paper focuses on the model structure and simulation results, and proposes a simple interface. Early feedback from technical staff confirms the simulator’s relevance in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This model offers a starting point for geothermal training programs in regions expanding their modular generation capacity using wellhead technology.
