Abstract Geothermal energy development transcends national and disciplinary boundaries, demanding global collaboration and a shared educational foundation. Supported by UNESCO, and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), IGCP Project 636 – Phase II: Geothermal Resources for Energy Transition promotes scientific and social innovation with education as a central pillar.
This study presents findings from a global survey of IGCP-636 member institutions and additional universities to catalog geothermal course offerings and identify gaps in curriculum coverage, accessibility, and disciplinary breadth. The survey captures the diversity of educational programs worldwide, spanning undergraduate and graduate levels, and provides a foundation for aligning geothermal education with workforce needs.
Findings reveal a fragmented but expanding global geothermal education landscape. IGCP-636 aims to strengthen international collaboration, promote interdisciplinary curricula, and support the development of standardized, modular content. Survey data will be mapped geographically and thematically, used to generate a global gap analysis, and inform curriculum design. Strengthening institutional linkages through peer exchange and co-development will be key to preparing the next generation of geothermal professionals and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals through inclusive, practice-oriented education.
