Abstract The SEHRENE Project, funded by HorizonEU, focuses on the use of waste heat from industries to store energy in an electrothermal energy storage (ETES) unit. This will be achieved using high temperature heat pump cycle combined with thermal energy storage and interconnected ORC system. Integration of ETES into the Kızıldere-2 (KZD-2) Geothermal Power Plant aims to enhance operational flexibility and energy efficiency. This study evaluates the site-specific requirements for ETES implementation, focusing on the utilization of reinjection brine as a heat source and other necessary equipment and materials, such as additionally cooling tower, a dedicated energy management system (EMS) and power connections to switchyard. By diverting reinjection brine, the system effectively harnesses otherwise wasted thermal energy while ensuring minimal disruption to existing plant operations. In order to prevent additional thermal load on the existing cooling infrastructure of KZD-2, use of a secondary cooling cycle is evaluated, avoiding potential increases in cooling water temperature that could negatively impact overall plant efficiency. Beyond technical feasibility, this study also assesses the financial viability of ETES integration, including investment costs, operational benefits and constraints, and projected return on the investment with regards to market clearing price (MCP) and system marginal prices (SMP). The analysis considers revenue streams from enhanced power output, improved flexibility for grid services, and potential participation in electricity markets with variable pricing. By combining the technical and financial evaluations, this work provides a comprehensive outlook on the potential of ETES to improve geothermal power plant performance while ensuring economic sustainability.
