Abstract Direct heat extraction from deeply buried sedimentary aquifers offers a sustainable, low-carbon solution for heating across Europe. Despite the considerable geothermal potential, project development faces high economic, technical and geological uncertainty, dissuading investment and impeding widespread deployment. The EU funded FindHeat project aims to address these challenges using a novel, conceptual model-based geothermal exploration workflow, which will be accessible online via an open source toolkit. This research, as part of the FindHeat initiative, explores the impact of different geological concepts in sedimentary aquifers for low enthalpy geothermal systems, with particular focus on fluvial architecture. For case studies from the Delft Sandstone (Netherlands) and Sherwood Sandstone, (UK), we use Rapid Reservoir Modelling (RRM), a sketch-based 3D modelling software, and further detailed dynamic simulations using the Delft Advanced Research Terra Simulator (DARTS). These tools allow us to demonstrate how different geological concepts and fluvial architecture impact heat flow, help identify optimal well locations, and enhance the economic output by maximising production and life time of the geothermal system.
By integrating conceptual geological modelling and dynamic flow simulations, the FindHeat workflow supports faster, more targeted, and cost-effective geothermal exploration in sedimentary basins. These findings show why strategic acquisition of exploration data can substantially reduce uncertainty and contribute to the development of improved exploration strategies. This will ultimately enable more successful and financially viable deployment of direct-use geothermal energy projects across Europe.
