Abstract This work presents version 1.0 of the Pan-European Atlas of Sustainable GeoEnergy Capacities (SGC), developed under the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) project. It introduces a harmonized mapping approach for deep geothermal resources, based on an adapted version of the Play-Based Exploration Pyramid (PBEP) methodology, collaboratively applied by European Geological Surveys.
The PBEP framework supports a multiscale exploration strategy, progressing from regional geosystem understanding to site-specific resource characterization. It structures geothermal data into four levels (0–3), allowing integration of geological, thermal, and technical knowledge with increasing resolution.
Version 1.0, published in spring 2025 via the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI), includes Levels 0 and 1. Level 0 compiles public data from boreholes and thermal springs, while Level 1 delivers a harmonized map of favourable areas for deep geothermal exploration, categorized into ~400 Geothermal Play Types (GPTs). Each GPT is supported by a factsheet summarizing key characteristics, data sources, and metadata.
The Atlas supports sustainable energy transition by identifying and communicating Europe’s geothermal potential through an accessible, standardized knowledge base. Upcoming versions 2.0 and 3.0 (expected by end of 2025 and 2026) will introduce Levels 2 and 3, focusing on quantitative assessments of geothermal reservoirs and localized 2D/3D models of selected targets.
Serving as a structured and harmonized geothermal knowledge base, the evolving PanEU Atlas of SGC is designed to be progressively enhanced with additional input, providing a solid foundation for the future EU Geothermal Action Plan
