Abstract This study presents a comprehensive analysis of reservoir modeling for the Hofsstadir geothermal field in W-Iceland, using data collected from 2000 to 2023. The modeling approach involves iterative steps, transitioning from initial data-driven simulations of regression models to more physically explainable lumped parameter models. The comparison of distinct modeling methods, considering different production scenarios, highlights the importance of accurate measurements and effective conceptualization of geothermal fields. A traditional lumped parameter modeling scheme was improved to enable treating production and injection separately, allowing for greater flexibility in incorporating monitoring data. Both the traditional and improved lumped parameter modeling emphasize the closed nature of the system, but sustainable production can be achieved with reinjection. Additionally, predictions for water level and temperature were made up to the year 2040, providing insights into the field's long-term behavior. The knowledge gained from modeling the low-temperature field of Hofsstadir is considered invaluable for the development of similar low-temperature geothermal fields. The study underscores the significance of direct measurements, data validation, and the continuous evolution of modeling techniques for robust geothermal reservoir assessments and sustainable energy development.
