Abstract The increasing demand for seasonal heat storage solutions within decarbonised energy systems necessitates the development of scalable and efficient high-temperature underground thermal energy storage technologies. This study presents a comprehensive methodology for the conception and numerical simulation of representative scenarios for Cavern Thermal Energy Storage (CTES) systems embedded in solid rock environments.
Geological feasibility is assessed through a probabilistic approach employing geostatistical realizations, focusing on the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical behavior of the surrounding rock mass during operation. A modeling framework is introduced to identify optimized scenarios with enhanced storage performance for purpose-built and reused CTES. This framework utilizes the finite element method to analyze CTES concerning optimal design, storage volume, and operational modes. The most suitable storage configurations are integrated into application-oriented simulation scenarios to examine the impacts of such storage facilities on the surrounding environment, accounting for water leakage and heat retention.
Exemplary simulation results highlight key design parameters and geological characteristics of the fractured rock mass that can significantly affect long-term storage performance. For example, results demonstrate that optimized geometries can have a decisive impact on the thermal efficiency of the storage system. Additionally, hydrogeological and geomechanical considerations are essential for identifying critical parameters related to increased heat loss. The findings aim to provide a foundation for the planning process of new CTES systems implemented in various geological settings.
