Abstract Traditional exploration and production (E&P) data serve as a valuable resource for mapping geothermal potential globally. An extensive subsurface temperature dataset has been utilized to assess geothermal potential across three distinct geographic regions. Geothermal gradients have been calculated for all available wells with temperature data, following thorough data quality checks and the application of a comprehensive bottom-hole temperature correction methodology. These geothermal gradients are then utilized to evaluate geothermal usage potential in each region via the construction of polygons at increasing depths, typically every 1000 meters below the surface. These polygons delimitate areas suitable for electricity generation (≥ 150°C at depth), marginal electricity generation (certain power plants only – 120-150°C), direct use applications (30-120°C), or ground source heat pumps only (≤ 30°C). These geothermal play estimations at various depths are integrated with additional technical data, including well tops, alongside economic modelling and numerical estimations of geothermal potential. This comprehensive analysis assesses the risks associated with each study area and ultimately identifies the 'sweet spots' for geothermal development.

The methodology has been applied to three selected study areas: Türkiye, recognized as a well-established geothermal player; the Great Valley Basin in California, which has a rich history of traditional geothermal operations and the potential for more advanced initiatives; and the Neuquén Basin in Argentina, noted for its emerging geothermal status, with ongoing projects and plans in development.
